Ethereum Goes on a Diet: 'Lean' Roadmap Wants ETH Slim, Secure, and Quantum-Proof by 2029 🍴
Ethereum researchers have outlined a multi-year "Lean Ethereum" overhaul aimed at replacing the core of the $ETH protocol over roughly the next 3-4 years. The plan introduces recursive STARKs, quantum-safe cryptography, multidimensional gas, and redesigned state architecture, with developers describing it as a long-term evolution rather than a single upgrade. Ethereum's developers also expect H-star to serve as the network's final pre-Lean fork before broader changes accelerate, and the roadmap includes provisions for higher gas limits aimed at improving finality speed and lowering transaction costs. Successful execution of the Lean roadmap could allow Ethereum to scale efficiently while maintaining backward compatibility, the developers said.
Development is already moving from concept to code, with teams focused on post-quantum security and scalable state management. Rather than wait for quantum computing to mature, researchers have launched PQ Devnets 0-4, test networks designed to evaluate quantum-resistant cryptography while remaining compatible with existing wallets. Work has also begun on reworking how Ethereum manages state through Verkle trees, state expiration models, and scalable storage models, with the goal of reducing validation costs and shortening node sync times without weakening decentralization.
These efforts build on the Glamsterdam upgrade, which has laid technical groundwork through ePBS, protocol simplification, and an increase in gas limits above 200 million. Developers have framed both Lean Ethereum and Glamsterdam as complementary steps toward hardening Ethereum's long-term resilience while limiting disruption for applications already running on the network.
