Ethlabs Founder Admits $ETH Still Has No Plot, Just 32% Staked and Vibes 📉

A former Ethereum Foundation researcher conceded on Laura Shin's Unchained podcast that $ETH still lacks a clear value narrative after years of failing to break above $5,000. Ansgar Dietrichs, who now works at the newly launched research lab Ethlabs, made the remark as the lab, founded by five ex-Ethereum Foundation researchers and backed by treasury firms Bitmine and Sharplink along with Consensys founder Joe Lubin, publicly launched on June 22. Shin stated: "What surprised me talking to Dietrichs [is that] he openly admits $ETH still has no clear value story after five years of being unable to break $5,000." Dietrichs said Ethlabs' mandate is to bring intentionality to what ether is actually meant to do.

The admission comes amid a broader restructuring at the Ethereum Foundation. In May, co-founder Vitalik Buterin said the foundation would shrink, sell less $ETH and refocus on censorship resistance, privacy and open infrastructure, disclosing that it holds just 0.16% of all $ETH. Buterin has separately stated that nearly 90% of his personal net worth remains in ether. Ethlabs' emergence has fueled debate over a talent drain from the foundation.

Onchain analytics firm Cryptoquant framed the current backdrop as Ethereum's "wall of worry," with analysts writing: "Historically, when speculative sentiment is this depressed while organic supply is being absorbed by staking, it creates a fragile environment for short-sellers." The firm said more than 32% of ether's total supply, roughly 39.5 million $ETH, is now locked in staking, while balances on exchanges have continued to shrink, reducing readily available supply. Cryptoquant also flagged an adoption paradox, noting that record daily active addresses and smart-contract activity have coincided with $ETH falling more than 50% from its cycle peak.
