Anthropic's Claude Models Get Unbanned, AI's Three-Week Timeout Officially Over 🤖

The U.S. Commerce Department lifted export controls on Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 on June 30, ending nearly three weeks of restrictions that had taken both models offline for users worldwide. Anthropic confirmed the reversal in a public statement, saying, "We've received notice that the Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5. We'll begin restoring access tomorrow, and will share an update soon." Full restoration across Claude.ai, the API, AWS Bedrock, and partner platforms began July 1.

The export controls had been imposed on June 12, three days after the models launched on June 9, citing national security concerns reportedly linked to potential jailbreaks of the models. Because Anthropic could not segment users by nationality in real time, the company suspended both Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 entirely for foreign nationals across every product surface. The directive created immediate operational disruption for customers globally, with access restricted pending resolution of talks between Anthropic and the White House.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick played a central role in the negotiations, sending a third letter to Anthropic as part of the review process. "Over the past two weeks, we have worked closely with Anthropic to analyze and approve Fable 5 to ensure alignment across the US Government and strengthen America's leadership in AI," Lutnick wrote in a public post. The formal clearance of both models on June 30 cleared the way for the July 1 restoration timeline.

Claude Fable 5 is Anthropic's most capable widely available model, built on the Mythos-class architecture with enhanced safeguards for general use, and is designed for demanding reasoning, long-horizon agentic work, software engineering, and advanced vision tasks. Mythos 5 shares the same underlying architecture but includes additional safeguards tailored for cybersecurity applications, with access originally reserved for trusted partners through Project Glasswing across government and enterprise deployments. The Commerce Department's reversal applies to both models, restoring full global availability.
