Meta Enters the Arena: Zuck's New Prediction Market Bets Big on Polymarket's Lunch 🍽️

By our Markets Desk2 min read

Meta is developing a standalone prediction market app called Arena, assembling a team led by CEO Mark Zuckerberg to enter a sector currently dominated by Polymarket and Kalshi. The platform would allow users to wager on outcomes ranging from elections and economic indicators to sports and pop culture.

The move lands as prediction markets record rapid user growth and trading volume. Kalshi posted $5.5 billion in trading volume tied to its crypto perpetual futures launch alone, according to industry figures cited in the report. Opening Bell Media CEO Phil Rosen highlighted the sector's expansion in comments to Yahoo! Finance. "If you take PolyMarket and Kalshi, they're growing very fast. They've become two of the most popular platforms in the world in a very short span of time," Rosen said.

Industry observers cited in the source material noted that Meta's distribution scale could give Arena a structural advantage over existing prediction market operators, given the company's reach across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Prediction markets, once used primarily by traders and analysts for forecasting, have broadened into mainstream consumer products over the past year, with event contracts covering politics, macro data, sports and entertainment.

The Arena project is still in development and no launch date has been disclosed. Both Polymarket and Kalshi operate as regulated or self-regulated event-contract exchanges in the United States, a legal framework Meta would need to navigate before offering similar products at scale. Meta has not publicly confirmed the project's scope, regulatory strategy, or geographic rollout.

The entry of a platform operator with Meta's user base into the prediction market segment comes as crypto-linked event contracts and perpetual futures continue to draw volume from retail and institutional participants. Whether Arena can convert Meta's social media footprint into active prediction market traders remains to be seen, but the competitive stakes for Polymarket and Kalshi have just risen.
