Hoskinson Hires the Bots, Not the Interns 🤖
Charles Hoskinson, founder of the Cardano network, is positioning artificial intelligence agents as core infrastructure for the blockchain's communication layer, arguing that communities scaling into the millions cannot be supported by linear hiring. The push comes as development of Midnight City advances on the Midnight Network, a digital environment populated by autonomous characters that transact, talk, and operate according to assigned memory and personality parameters.
Hoskinson's remarks followed criticism of a synthetic influencer that appeared on the Input Output Global account, an experiment he described as transparent trial-and-error rather than a polished product. He pointed to OpenClaw, an open-source agent project, as evidence that autonomous tools are gaining traction at what he called a remarkable speed, and said the future of crypto communications would not rely on a handful of community managers tweeting in real time. "We're going to need agents and AI to be able to organize and sort all that out and broadcast on a regular basis what's going on in Midnight City," Hoskinson said on June 20, 2026.
He sketched a near-term roadmap that includes AI chief marketing officers, broadcasting tools designed to feel lifelike, and the integration of emerging agent standards across Cardano's channels. In his framing, automation is intended to absorb the routine layer of reporting, moderation, and outreach so that human staff focus on higher-order coordination.
Midnight City is being used to demonstrate that model in practice. The platform offers three viewing lenses. The default view shows only data committed openly to the chain, an auditor view reveals selective information to parties holding the appropriate cryptographic clearance, and a God mode exposes each agent's internal state, including goals, memory, and history that would otherwise remain private. The setup is designed to show how selective disclosure functions in a live setting, with the agents operating as functional residents of the city rather than passive demonstrations.
