Two Sides Of A Digital Coin: Congress To Debate Crypto's Geopolitical Coin Toss 🪙

The U.S. House Oversight Subcommittee on Military and Foreign Affairs has scheduled a crypto roundtable for June 25 to examine digital assets' role in the global economy and their national security implications. Subcommittee Chairman William Timmons announced the session in a press release, titled "Two Sides of a Digital Coin: Protecting U.S. Security by Challenging the Power of Repressive Foreign Regimes." The hearing comes as Congress works to develop frameworks for the digital asset industry, with the CLARITY Act among the focal points of that effort.

According to the release, the roundtable will examine how cryptocurrencies can empower individuals living under repressive or economically unstable regimes. Members and experts will discuss how digital assets allow such individuals to protect their finances, access essential aid, and preserve economic autonomy when state-controlled systems collapse or are used against citizens. The session will also address the national security implications of U.S. leadership and competitiveness in digital finance.

Rep. Timmons said the rapid evolution of digital finance is reshaping the global economic and geopolitical landscape, creating new opportunities and vulnerabilities for the United States. He framed the roundtable as a step toward understanding how the U.S. can both safeguard its interests and support the use of crypto as a tool of financial freedom abroad. The release added that "Members and experts will also discuss the national security implications of U.S. leadership and competitiveness in the digital finance space."

The June 25 session is part of a broader congressional push to clarify regulatory oversight of digital assets, an effort that has gained momentum as lawmakers seek to define jurisdictional lines between agencies overseeing $BTC, $ETH, and other tokens. The subcommittee did not immediately name the witness list for the roundtable, and further details on participants are expected closer to the date.
