Africa Goes Stablecoin-First and XRP Bags an Invite to the Party 🌍

Africa's pivot toward stablecoin-based cross-border payments is drawing renewed institutional attention to XRP, with payments-rail expansion across the continent emerging as a near-term catalyst for the token.

Onyeka David Igwegbe, chief executive officer of BlockVest and a member of the Nigeria chapter of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management, said the continent's shift to dollar-pegged settlement tokens is reshaping how remittances and merchant payments are routed. "Stablecoin-driven payments are fundamentally changing how money moves across African borders, opening the door for faster settlement and more efficient remittances," Igwegbe said.

Ripple, the company most closely associated with XRP, has separately agreed to acquire Standard Custody & Trust Company for up to $250 million. The transaction expands Ripple's U.S. trust charter footprint and is intended to support its broader push into regulated digital-asset custody and settlement services. XRP itself remains the native token of the XRP Ledger, a public blockchain used by Ripple's enterprise payments products.

Market data cited in industry coverage shows XRP trading near $1.46 at the time of publication, with analysts noting that renewed institutional interest in cross-border payments infrastructure has kept the token in focus. Separately, former Goldman Sachs analyst Vincent Du has publicly projected a long-term price target of $1,000 for XRP, a forecast that has circulated widely on social media but remains unverified by any on-chain or institutional data.

Industry observers say the combination of stablecoin adoption across African corridors, Ripple's expanding regulatory footprint and continued institutional discussion around payments infrastructure has reinforced XRP's positioning as a utility token tied to cross-border settlement, even as broader crypto markets await further directional cues.
