BitGo Buys Itself a 20% Pop While the Stock Still Lives 65% Below Its IPO 🪙

—By our Markets Desk2 min read

BitGo (BTGO) shares climbed as much as 20% on Wednesday after the crypto custody and infrastructure provider authorized a $50 million share repurchase program covering up to 8% of its outstanding common stock. The buyback takes effect immediately and has no fixed expiration date, with purchases to be made through open-market transactions, privately negotiated deals and block trades. "This authorization reflects the Board's confidence in our business and long-term trajectory," Chief Financial Officer Ed Reginelli said in a statement.

The intraday rally did little to repair the damage since the company's January listing on the New York Stock Exchange. BitGo priced its IPO at $18 and recently traded around $6.07, leaving the equity more than 65% below its debut level. The slide mirrors a wider cooldown in digital-asset-linked equities following last year's run of crypto public offerings, with bitcoin ($BTC) recently changing hands near $65,797.58 and investor attention pivoting toward artificial intelligence stocks and upcoming tech listings.

The souring backdrop has prompted several crypto firms to pull back from public market plans. Kraken and Consensys are among the companies that have paused listing efforts during the downturn. BitGo, which provides custody, trading, staking and settlement services, has continued to expand its regulated offerings, including its BaFin-licensed infrastructure platform in Germany. The company is positioning that platform to serve firms adapting to the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, or MiCA, ahead of a licensing deadline at the end of the month.

BitGo also issues USD1, the U.S. dollar stablecoin associated with the Trump family-backed World Liberty Financial project. As of Wednesday's close, the $50 million buyback represents a portion of the company's public float and is structured to support liquidity in the stock without committing to a specific timeline for completion.
