Coinbase Says Hold My Beer: Stocks, Perps, and an AI Butler Walk Into an "Everything Exchange" 🍻

Coinbase used its System Update event on Tuesday to lay out a sweeping expansion of its platform, positioning itself as what it calls an "everything exchange" that merges crypto and traditional finance inside a single app. The exchange unveiled plans to offer stock and ETF trading alongside digital assets, the ability to transfer equity portfolios from brokerages such as Schwab or Robinhood, and perpetual-style stock indexes available 24/7, including to U.S. users. Coinbase also confirmed it will launch crypto and stock options, with crypto options targeted for later this year and stock options set for this summer.

In a further extension of its derivatives lineup, Coinbase announced pre-IPO perpetuals giving users early exposure to private companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic. The exchange also introduced time-based predictions, allowing users to take positions on the future prices of crypto assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, and Hyperliquid, with timeframes ranging from 15 minutes out to a full year. Coinbase also unveiled a separate product described as an SEC-registered AI investment advisor intended to manage user portfolios, and it pointed to tokenized stocks it plans to launch, stating these instruments will be backed 1:1 and are distinct from derivatives or IOUs.

Markets reacted to the announcements. Shares of Coinbase, listed under the ticker $COIN, climbed to $170 amid the news. Standard Chartered has projected that real-world asset tokenization could expand by 40x by 2030, a backdrop cited as supportive of the broader push toward blending equities and crypto rails on a single venue. Coinbase is not alone in chasing that convergence, as tokenized stocks and perpetual futures have grown in prominence following the trading volumes generated by Hyperliquid.

Coinbase framed the move as a response to what it described as the disappearing wall between crypto and traditional finance, with the company aiming to serve as the single interface on the other side of that line. The combined offering now spans equities, options, crypto trading, perpetuals, predictions, staking-based borrowing against assets such as SOL, and AI-driven portfolio management, all under one roof.
