BlackRock's Boomer ETF Outperforms Like a DeFi Blue-Chip (Seriously)

—By our Markets Desk2 min read

BlackRock's iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) has been quietly crushing the U.S. stock market for over two decades. Since 2001, this exchange-traded fund has outperformed its peers every single year—a track record that would make even the most hardened crypto degen blush.

IGM delivered a respectable 22.50% gain over the past 12 months and a whopping 119.90% over five years. Meanwhile, the benchmark index managed only 14.78% and 79.32% respectively. The numbers speak for themselves: this ETF has been printing money while the broader market played catch-up.

Nvidia (NVDA) dominates the fund with a 9.05% allocation, meaning its 1,060% AI-fueled rally has been particularly kind to IGM holders. Microsoft (8.70%), Apple (8.56%), and Broadcom (7.41%) round out the major positions. Apple, despite its recent AI FOMO struggles, was the NVDA of the smartphone era and historically drove massive growth.

Palantir (PLTR) has also become increasingly important, riding its AI narrative and S&P 500 inclusion to triple-digit gains in 2025.

But here's where it gets spicy: IGM comes with a 0.39% expense ratio (not exactly DeFi-cheap) and carries significant systemic risk. The entire tech sector's explosive growth is tied to the AI narrative. If artificial intelligence hits regulatory speed bumps or adoption stalls, this ETF could face a brutal correction.

On the flip side, if tech CEOs' AGI fantasies become reality, IGM's advantage could grow exponentially. It's essentially a concentrated bet on whether AI will save humanity or become the mother of all market bubbles.

For crypto natives, this ETF represents TradFi's attempt to capture tech disruption—less exciting than DeFi protocols but with two decades of proven performance. Whether that's enough to justify the fees and concentration risk depends on your appetite for centralized tech exposure.
